Texas Flag

This is the state flag of Texas, which is located in the United States of America. As far as flag designs go, the Texas flag is pretty cool. The colours don't clash, it doesn't have too many designs, and it doesn't look like the result of a primary school flag competition.

The name Texas comes from the Hasinai word tayshas, meaning friends or allies. The Spanish explorers mistakenly thought it was the name of the location and its people. That's okay, because explorers often make mistakes. In Australia, the word Budgerigar (a small domestic parakeet) literally translates apparently translates as good to eat.

Texas is the second-largest state in the USA (after Alaska), and has an area of 690,000 square kilometers. It's big enough that even in Australia people will use the phrase 'bigger than Texas', however that may also be due to the large importing of popular media into Australia from the USA.

Texas formed part of the Spanish colony of New Spain, and became part of Mexico after the Mexican independence in 1821. In 1836 Texas became an independent republic. In 1846 Texas was admitted to the United States as a slave state. In 1861 Texas seceded from the USA, and in 1870 was readmitted.

Texas used to be even bigger than it is today, taking up parts of modern-day Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Wyoming. However, about one third of its land was given up in the compromise of 1850, in return for $10,000,000.

Large sectors in the Texas economy include IT, oil, natural gas, energy exploration and trading, agriculture and manufacturing.
