State flag of Nevada

This is the state flag of Nevada, in the United States of America.

The flag consists of two sprays of sagebush, and the words "Battle Born Nevada". The words "Battle Born" reflect the fact that Nevada was admitted to the union during Civil War. A close-up of the design can be seen below.

Nevada Emblem

The flag was first proposed in 1926, when Nevada Lieutenant Governor Maurice Sullivan decided that the old state flag was too expensive to produce, and a more budget design would encourage its use in schools. A contest was held, and the winner (Louis Shellback, III) was given $25 prize money, and the honour of having designed the state flag.

The change of flag was rejected in 1927, and it was not officially introduced until 1929, admist an incredible amount of political debate. It seems that the Assembly felt that people would get confused unless the flag contained the state's name, and the 1927 flag did not. Eventually it was added to the design.

In 1991, Senator William Raggio changed the lettering on the flag, claiming that it had always bothered him. What better reason to change a state flag?

Nevada has had more flags than any other USA state during the last 100 years. I'm sure some people would feel uncomfortable with references to violence on their state flag, so it wouldn't surprise me if it were to change again at some point.
