National Flag of Tibet

This is the flag used by the Tibetan government-in-exile. Its use in Tibet iself is forbidden by Chinese authorities. Closer detail of the emblem can be seen below:

Tibetan Emblem

Tibet has an average elevation of 4,900m, and it is sometimes referred to as the "roof of the world". The capital of Tibet is Lhasa.

In 1904, the British sent an Indian military force into Tibet, and seized the capital, forcing Tibet to open its border with British India. In 1906 a treaty with China declared Tibet a British protectorate. In 1907 a treaty between Britian, China and Russia recognised Chinese sovereignty over Tibet. Direct rule by the Chinese was established in 1910, but lost in 1911 when the Xinhai revolution caused the retreat of Chinese troops, and the Dalai Lama re-established power. In 1913, both Tibet and Mongolia signed a treaty proclaiming their independence from China, however China never renounced its claims to Tibet.

In 1950 the People's Liberation Army entered Tibet, and in 1951 the Dalai Lama and Panchen Lama signed a treaty under military pressure for a joint Chinese-Tebetan rule. In 1959 an attempted revolution was defeated, and the Dalai Lama went into exile into India.

Tibet is the home to thousands of buddhist monestaries. Unfortunately, during the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution of China, from 1966-1969, the monestaries became the target of organised vandalism, and very few of them remain in their original condition.
