This is the flag of the Asturias province of Spain. The flag shows the Cruz de la Victoria (Cross of Victory). Legend has it that the flag was flown in the battle of Covadonga against the Moors in 722. Led by Don Pelayo, who was to later become king, this battle was recognised as the "Reconquista", or re-conquest of Spain against Moorish occupation. The greek letters Alpha and Omega hang from the cross.
Located in the northern part of Spain, the capital of Asturias is Oviedo, and the original Cruz de la Victoria can be found in its cathedral, although the cross has now been inlaid with gold and gems. Asturias is a mountainous region, and the traditional agricultur in the region is dairy production. Coal and steel industries also exist.
Asturias is famous for its lamb, seafood, and cider. Its most notable dish is Fabada Asturiana -- a rich bean stew made from white beans, saffron, spicy sausage, a shoulder of pork, and black blood sausage. Yum!
